In 2001, perfumer Jacques Polge created Coco Mademoiselle as a tribute to those women who suggested spraying perfume on the places they hoped to be kissed. He sought to capture the multifaceted nature of Mademoiselle Chanel, much like a spectrum of light. Coco Mademoiselle embodies her creative genius, her foresight, and her unwavering determination, allowing her to leave an unforgettable impression with her elegant poise. Coco Mademoiselle embodies the spirit of Mademoiselle Chanel,
reinterpreted with a modern twist: a light, sensual fragrance for a seductive and unique woman. Its understated scent emphasises the independent character of a woman of exceptional sensuality. At 7 pm at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, a young woman wanders through the galleries; a simple white blouse paired with a black knee-length circle skirt highlights her poise and depth. Though deeply captivated by the works before her, she notices a man standing with his back to her, equally absorbed in the paintings. She approaches him, her sensual and feminine floral fragrance wafting around her; he turns to look at her, and she smiles at him; she is Coco Mademoiselle.

This is the backstory created by Chanel’s perfumer Jacques Polge for the new fragrance’s advertising campaign. Through Coco Mademoiselle, he pays tribute to Coco Chanel, who spent her entire life ‘stripping away the superfluous’—cutting, removing and hollowing out, leaving only the essential and timeless lines of her designs. Artistic Director Jacques Helleu chose a transparent, diamond-cut bottle to highlight the pale amber-coloured fragrance within. In contrast to the black of Coco’s era, white—with its luminous qualities—was deeply cherished by Coco Chanel, whilst also embodying the inexhaustible vitality of the Leo she was. From the walls of the flagship store on Rue Cambon, to the villa in Roquebrune, the packaging of No. 5, and the uniform white of the camellia, all reflect her understated taste. Consequently, Jacques Helleu crafted the cap from white frosted glass; eschewing labels, the brand and fragrance name are printed directly onto the white frosted glass with a gold-rimmed border; a pearl-white satin ribbon bearing the Chanel logo wraps around the neck of the bottle, resembling an amniotic seal, and even the outer box is pearl-white. “This modernised, fresh oriental fragrance is not a derivative of the 1980s Coco perfume, but rather Chanel’s entirely new interpretation of order, dignity and understated elegance,” says Jacques Polge.
