Amouage is a truly Arabian perfume brand and a symbol of pure spiciness. Although Amouage is a relatively young brand in the world of perfumery, it enlisted the renowned Parisian perfumer Guy Robert to create its fragrances right from the outset. The brand’s aim is to fill the void in the high-end perfume industry in the Middle East and Central Asia, a region renowned as a ‘paradise of spices’. Imports of Omani frankincense through the port of Guangzhou once reached as much as one or two hundred tonnes annually. Ships carrying these spices would return to the Arabian Peninsula laden with Chinese fine goods such as silk and porcelain, forming a maritime spice route that ran parallel to the Maritime Silk Road.
