Loris Azzaro, an Italian who adored Paris, drew inspiration from Tunisian art during his youth and was a true artist. In the mid-1960s, he arrived in Paris and achieved great success. Within just a few months, he had opened his own haute couture boutique in the suburbs. He designed clothing for socialites and film stars such as Tina Turner, Jane Birkin, Claudia Cardinale, Romy Schneider, Raquel Welch, Princess Grace of Monaco, the Queen of Iran, the Duchess of Orléans and other socialites and film stars.
As the descendant of Italian immigrants, Loris Azzaro was born in 1933 in Tunisia, a country on the azure Mediterranean. Tunisia’s hot climate, abundant sunshine, carefree childhood and diverse cultural background profoundly influenced his later creative work. Driven by a love for the silks sold in Tunisia’s traditional souks, Loris showed an early passion for the traditional gowns crafted by his grandmother. At the age of 14, he even designed and tailored a dress for his mother. At 19, Loris travelled to France to pursue his career. He first launched silk bags and pearl-encrusted belts, and shortly thereafter presented his first ready-to-wear collection at the Grand Hôtel de Paris. It caused an immediate sensation.
Naturally, he expanded his business from ready-to-wear to perfumery. In 1975, Loris Azzaro launched his first fragrance, the eponymous ‘Azzaro for Women’, a sensual and elegant scent that was a godsend for women. This was followed by a string of successes in his fragrance career, including Azzaro pour Homme, Eau Bella, Orange Tonic, Azzaro Pour Homme, Chrome, Collection, and Visit’y – all classics of olfactory seduction.
