The founder, Giorgio Armani, was born in 1934 on the outskirts of Milan. In 1957, after completing his military service, he joined the then-prestigious department store ‘La Rinascente’ as a window dresser. In 1961, he moved to Nino Cerruti to work as a designer. In 1974, he partnered with his friend Sergio Galeotti to launch a menswear brand bearing his own name, Giorgio Armani. From its very debut, the Giorgio Armani menswear collection attracted significant attention from fashion buyers and the media. It is worth noting that his sister, Rosanna Armani, was an Italian top model; she used her influence to help bring Giorgio Armani into the public eye.
In 1982, Armani’s first women’s fragrance was launched, simply named ‘Armani’. A floral fragrance, it came in a charming octagonal bottle. Ten years later, he introduced ‘Gio’, a fruity floral scent that won the FiFi Award—the ‘Oscar’ of the fragrance industry—for Best Women’s Fragrance in 1994. The bottle’s design was inspired by Armani’s classic men’s wear with its broad shoulders. The sleek silhouette perfectly encapsulates Armani’s design philosophy: ‘less is more’. Acqua Di Gio was specially created to evoke the feeling of a Mediterranean summer, with a ‘flower of water’ scent, and it too won a FiFi Award in 1996.
