TERRE draws upon the finest elements of the vast earth—the wind, the sun, the dew, the fruits, and the floral and fruity notes—to create a unique fragrance. The seven ingredients contained within TERRE are composed entirely of plant and mineral essences. With 60% Western red cedar forming its core structure, the aim was to capture a freshness and luminous vitality that cannot be found in the citrus notes typically found on the market; thus, a new citrus accord was created. TERRE, meaning ‘the earth from which all things arise’, was conceived when perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena was moved by the sensation of his body and mind being immersed in wine. Realising that grapes, once transformed into wine, allow humanity to share in the emotions of the earth and the passage of time, he spent a year walking through vineyards, touching the soil and understanding that it is the source of all things; passing through the cellars, he sensed that within the dusty bottles, living elements were constantly evolving; thus, when uncorked, the wine’s aroma was like a perfume, an emotion living in the air. Thus, he created Terre d’Hermès, a wholly new concept of the earth. Perfumer Jean Claude Ellena originally sought to create a fragrance free from animal ingredients and musk, one that harmonises with the skin and reflects the essence of human nature and individuality. Much like the artisans at Hermès—who craft iconic pieces such as the Kelly bag with meticulous attention to detail and are renowned for possessing the ‘Hermès touch’—Jean values creative yet humanistic details, and aspires to create a fragrance through innovative methods that leaves a lasting, unforgettable impression. The fragrance is composed entirely of natural ingredients. The lively notes of grapefruit, sweet pepper and pink peppercorns, set against the noble scent of geranium and the resilient aroma of Western red cedar, create an atmosphere that is equally at home in both dynamic and serene settings. Deeply moved by the abundance of the earth’s minerals, he was frustrated by the absence of a distinct ‘mineral scent’ in the world. He therefore touched them repeatedly and struck flint to commit the scent to memory, then, much like composing a musical score, he fine-tuned the formula in his mind to create a mineral scent unlike any other in the world.
