YSL: Yves Saint Laurent is a world-renowned fashion brand specialising in ready-to-wear, skincare, perfumes, luggage, and accessories. Mr Yves Saint Laurent was born on 1 August 1936 in Algeria, then a French colony in North Africa. Coming from a wealthy family, he had ample opportunity to encounter haute couture and fine jewellery whilst growing up, and over time this fostered a deep passion for fashion. At the age of 17, he set off alone for Paris, the fashion capital, to study fine art, and soon after shifted his focus to the field of fashion design. At the age of 18, he won first prize in a fashion design competition and was recommended to work under Christian Dior, serving as Dior’s assistant.
In 1961, Yves Saint Laurent and his close friend Pierre Bergé began their joint venture. In 1966, Yves Saint Laurent opened his first ready-to-wear boutique on the Left Bank of the Seine in Paris, naming it ‘Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche’. Yves Saint Laurent’s bold use of colour and materials brought a fresh new look and feel to fashion, cementing his leading position in the design world and earning him the reputation as a living legend of the 20th century.
Since 1964, when Yves Saint Laurent launched a women’s perfume named after the first letter of his name, ‘Y’, the YSL brand has been inextricably linked with fragrance. Yves Saint Laurent’s innovative philosophy of perfumery clearly distinguishes consumers’ unique personalities and lifestyles, making it the epitome of personalised fragrances. The widely acclaimed “Yves Saint Laurent Opium” (SL Opium) was launched in 1977 following Yves Saint Laurent’s trip to China. Deeply moved by Chinese culture, he drew inspiration from the shape of snuff bottles, crafting YSL Opium with its subtle, lingering scent and rich, mystical Eastern allure. This was also the first fragrance to break with traditional naming conventions; upon its launch, it caused a global sensation and remains among the world’s top-ranked perfumes to this day. YSL Kouros exudes a masculine, virile and healthy aura, whilst YSL Paris evokes the fashion capital of Paris and the tenderness and romance of Parisian women; Launched in 1988, YSL Jazz for men flows through international metropolises like jazz music, exuding a sense of freedom and optimism.
In 1999, Tom Ford took over as Creative Director at YSL; his remarkable talent and precise creativity propelled Yves Saint Laurent back to the forefront of the fashion world. After 2000, Tom Ford’s successive launches—the women’s fragrance ‘NU’ and the men’s fragrance ‘M7’—sparked a buying frenzy thanks to their distinctive scents and bold, sensual advertising campaigns, continuing the legend of the Yves Saint Laurent brand.
